The World Trade Center station is located near the site of the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad (H&M)'s Hudson Terminal, which opened on July 19, 1909. In 1961, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey bought the bankrupt H&M system, rebranded it as PATH, and redeveloped Hudson Terminal as part of the World Trade Center .

With the opening of the IND Queens Boulevard Line from 50th Street to Roosevelt Avenue on August 19, 1933, E service began, running between Roosevelt Avenue and Hudson Terminal (current World Trade Center station) on the IND Eighth Avenue Line. Nearly two decades after it was closed, the new E train subway entrance will open Monday in the World Trade Center's Oculus transportation hub, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey This consists of original steps down and a ramp down to the doors into the World Trade Center E train Station (The PATH station is what makes the E train station wheelchair accessible). Another connecting passageway (also providing wheelchair accessibility) leads to the N,R, and W trains and the uptown platform at Cortlandt Street (downtown passengers must use the underpass). NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — For the first time since 9/11, commuters have access to the E train at the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. The new entrance opened Monday on the second level in the northeast corner of the Oculus, providing direct access for PATH riders without going outside. The PATH train serves the World Trade Center terminal from multiple points in New Jersey. If traveling by car from New Jersey or other points west, the Harrison PATH station is a convenient location. Park in an adjacent parking facility, then take PATH to the World Trade Center. Check the PATH website for schedules, maps, and service changes.
